Tackling the fly issue at source

We refer to the forum letter “正视食肆的苍蝇问题” (13 Jan 2025), and thank the writer for the suggestions.

The presence of flies is one indicator of unsanitary conditions in the vicinity. Maintaining a high level of cleanliness in places where food and food waste are handled is central to keeping the population of flies in check.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and National Environment Agency (NEA) work together with relevant premises managers and other stakeholders to upkeep the hygiene standards of food establishments and the cleanliness of the surroundings. These efforts include enhancing waste management practices. NEA and SFA also conduct checks for table littering offences at hawker centres, food courts and coffeeshops. Enforcement actions are taken when offences are detected.

Food establishments and premises managers must also ensure their premises and refuse bins are cleaned regularly and thoroughly. Food should be stored properly to prevent access by flies and other pests.

Diners at public dining areas can also do their part to deny flies their food sources by keeping dining tables clean and returning used crockeries and trays to the designated collection points.

Consistent and sustained efforts by all stakeholders are necessary to ensure our environment remains clean and hygienic. The agencies will continue to work closely with our stakeholders to upkeep the hygiene conditions at food establishments. Individual patrons and diners have a role to play as well.
