Plastic bags for takeaway hot beverages regulated for safety

We refer to the letter by Zhang Xinyuan, “避免用塑料袋装热饮” (30 June 2026), and thank the writer for highlighting the importance of ensuring the safe use of packaging for hot beverages.

We agree that it is important for plastic food packaging to be used safely. Takeaway tie-up plastic bags that are intended for hot beverages are made from thermostable materials that can withstand high temperatures and are safe for holding hot beverages when used as intended.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) adopts a science-based risk management approach to food safety that is consistent with international standards. Food contact articles, including takeaway tie-up plastic bags for hot beverages, are regulated in Singapore to ensure that they do not release harmful substances into food.

Food handlers are also taught the proper use of plastic food packaging in the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1. This is a course which SFA requires all food handlers to attend and pass.

We would like to remind all food establishments and consumers to use plastic food packaging that is designed to withstand high temperatures, and to always follow manufacturers’ instructions for the safe usage of such packaging. More information on the safe use of plastic food packaging can be found on SFA’s website:
