We thank the writer of the Forum letter “Clearer rules needed for pet-friendly dining areas” (Nov 3, 2025) for the feedback.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) regularly reviews our food safety regulatory framework through a science-based risk management approach, to safeguard consumer health while considering the evolving needs of the food industry.

Retail food businesses that are not serving pet food no longer need to seek additional approval from SFA to allow patrons to bring pets along for dine-in at outdoor refreshment areas. SFA has assessed that the food safety and zoonotic transmission risks are low and prevailing food safety requirements for retail food businesses are sufficient to mitigate these risks.

Business operators of pet-friendly food premises are encouraged to provide an adequate number of clear signs to notify patrons of the area where pets are allowed to be in. This is to let patrons make an informed choice when deciding to dine at these premises.

Additionally, these operators are encouraged to provide an adequate number of hand sanitisers and signs directing patrons to the nearest handwashing facility, so that patrons can sanitise or wash their hands after interacting with pets and before consuming food.

Good hygiene practices such as hand-washing are crucial in reducing the risk of disease transmission. More information on the relevant guidelines for operators of pet-friendly food premises can be found on SFA’s website.

While SFA continues to be vigilant and ensures regulatory measures are in place and properly enforced, food safety is a joint responsibility. Retail food businesses should adopt good food safety practices to ensure food safety and a conducive environment for all patrons.

Consumers should also practise good food hygiene such as washing hands before eating. Members of the public may report any food safety concerns to SFA via the online feedback form (www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback).
