Downgrading of food shop “Word & Adam’s Corner” located at 50 Genting Lane, #04-06, Cideco Industrial Complex, Singapore 349558 due to Food Poisoning Incident

28 persons were reported to have gastroenteritis symptoms after consuming food prepared by “Word & Adam’s Corner” located at 50 Genting Lane, #04-06, Cideco Industrial Complex, Singapore 349558 on 6 May 2019. One person who was hospitalised has since been discharged and has recovered.

Joint inspections by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) were conducted at Word Pte Ltd on 8 May 2019 and 28 May 2019. Faecal coliforms were detected in a ready-to-eat food sample and on the packing table, indicating poor hygiene and food preparation practices. Several hygiene lapses were also identified during the inspections, including the engaging of unregistered food handlers, poor maintenance of premises and equipment, improper food storage and poor food handling practices of the food handlers. SFA will take enforcement actions for the lapses.

Following investigations, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has adjusted the food shop’s food hygiene grade from “B” to “C” with effect from 26 July 2019, to be reviewed in 12 months, and will keep the premises under surveillance meanwhile. Members of the public can view the food hygiene grade after the review at this link: http://www.sfa.gov.sg/tools-and-resources/track-records.

Food operators are reminded to adhere to good food hygiene and safety processes. Infection prevention practices such as the washing of hands before handling food can greatly reduce the incidence of gastroenteritis when adopted by all key stakeholders, including the industry and public.
