SFA strengthens preparedness for food supply disruption

            The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) successfully conducted an exercise on 23 September 2026 to strengthen Singapore's preparedness and operational readiness for potential food supply disruptions. The exercise was observed by Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, Dr. Janil Puthucheary.

2          Singapore's food supply resilience is underpinned by SFA's multi-pronged food resilience strategy, the Singapore Food Story 2. This includes diversifying import sources, global partnerships, growing local, and stockpiling. SFA regularly reviews its contingency plans to ensure Singapore remains prepared for potential food supply disruptions.

3          The exercise tested Singapore’s readiness to respond to a severe food supply disruption. SFA officers, together with industry stakeholders such as stockpile operators, logistics providers and retailers, tested systems, procedures and logistic arrangements to move stockpiled food items from warehouses to retail outlets efficiently. The exercise also tested day-to-day operations at a participating retail outlet that could be activated to support the distribution of essential food items during a severe supply disruption.

4          The exercise enabled SFA and industry partners to validate contingency plans and strengthen collective readiness to respond to potential disruptions. Insights from the exercise will be incorporated into future planning and preparedness efforts. Dr Janil Puthucheary said: "Food supply disruptions can arise unexpectedly from many factors, including disease outbreaks, climate-related events and geopolitical developments. Stockpiling provides an important buffer while we restore food supply during widespread disruptions. We must be ready to mobilise these stocks when needed. Exercises such as this enable us to test our plans, strengthen coordination across the food supply chain, and enhance our readiness to manage potential disruptions. Through close collaboration between the Government and industry partners, we can strengthen the resilience of our food supply chain and continue to provide Singaporeans with access to a safe and secure food supply."
