We agree with Tan Lay Ling that good personal hygiene and food-handling practices are essential in safeguarding food safety (Down to the individual employee to practise hygiene for consumers’ food safety, Oct 7).

While food businesses are responsible for putting in place proper food safety systems, food workers also have an important part to play in following safe food handling practices consistently. These include washing their hands properly, preventing cross-contamination, and maintaining good personal hygiene when preparing and serving food.

All food workers are required to attend and pass the WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 and have the necessary knowledge and skills before they are allowed to handle food. The course covers key food safety principles and safe food handling practices.

Food workers also have to undergo recertification periodically to refresh and keep their food safety knowledge up to date. In cases involving serious food safety lapses that result in the suspension of a food business, food workers employed by the implicated food business are required to re-attend and pass the Food Safety Course Level 1 before they can resume work.

Food safety is a joint responsibility. While the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) sets and enforces regulatory measures, food businesses and food workers must uphold good hygiene and food safety practices in their daily operations.

Consumers can also play a part by alerting SFA to unsafe food-handling practices via our online feedback form. SFA looks into such feedback seriously, and will take enforcement action where there is sufficient evidence.
