Jurong Fishery Port
SFA operates two fishery ports at Jurong and Senoko. They provide 24-hour service daily to foreign and local fishing vessels for bunkering, discharging and transshipment of fish. The non-regulatory functions such as maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation of the ports and its whole markets have been outsourced to a managing agent from 1 November 2005 onwards. The current managing agent at the ports is M/s SMM Pte Ltd.

Location
Jurong Fishery Port (JFP) is situated at the mouth of the Jurong River at the south western part of Singapore. It is located at Fishery Port Road. It has an area of 5.1 hectares and started operations in 1969. JFP is an international port for foreign fishing vessels to land their fish catch. It serves not only as a docking and bunkering base for foreign fishing vessels operating in the Indian and Pacific Ocean, but also as a marketing and distribution centre for fresh fish. JFP operates 24 hours a day, all year round, except for marketing and distribution activities, which are closed on Monday mornings between 0200 hours and 0600 hours.

Facilities
JFP provides facilities, which include a 400 metre long wharf, a wholesale fish market, shops, ice-crusher stalls, canteens and fish merchants' office units. JFP also has a computerised water batching system, which dispenses potable water to fishing vessels berthed at the wharf.
Supply of fish
Fishing vessels and fish reefer boats calling at JFP usually unload their catch between 2300 hrs and 0200 hrs for wholesale through the fish merchants. Other than importation by sea from Indonesia, fish sold at JFP are also brought in by trucks by land from Malaysia and Thailand, and by air from countries like Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar and Vietnam. In addition, frozen tuna is transshipped through the JFP.
Marketing and wholesale activities
JFP's wholesale fish market is 9,000 sq meters in area and houses 110 market lots. There are about 103 fish merchants licensed by the SFA conducting wholesale fish business at JFP. On average 2,000 to 3,000 fish retailers, fish processors and institutional buyers come to JFP's wholesale fish market daily to buy fish. Fish are displayed for sale in the market lots and their freshness is maintained by the crushed ice in the fish box. Fish are sold by wholesale in bulk at a negotiated price. An average of 200-250 tonnes of fresh fish is handled each day. Peak hours of sale are from 0200 hrs to 0600 hrs, except on Monday mornings when the market is closed.
Types of fish
More than a hundred species of fish including prawn, crab, lobster and finfish are sold at the JFP. The price of fish fluctuates depending on supply and demand as well as type, size and the freshness of fish. Popular species of fish sold include Sea Bream, Spanish Mackerel, Gold-Banded Scad, Red Snapper, Mackerel, Pomfret, Grouper, Threadfin, Horse Mackerel, shrimp/prawn and squid.

Marine Aquaculture Centre
The Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC) of the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), located on St John's Island in the open southern waters of Singapore, plays a role in deepening Singapore’s expertise in the areas of aquaculture genetics, nutrition and health. As part of the Aquaculture Department under SFA, MAC plays an important role in boosting food fish production to meet Singapore's 30 by 30 goal, hence contributing to SFA's mission of ensuring and securing a supply of safe food.
MAC undertakes research and development in tropical marine aquaculture. Its programmes range from selective breeding, large-scale hatchery production to fish nutrition. MAC also provides specialised aquaculture R&D facilities, resources and expertise to enable IHLs and RIs to carry out R&D. With easy access to biological materials, such as live feeds, seabass eggs, and facilities, like the experimental tank systems and the R&D feed mill, MAC is able to accommodate projects of various nature. In addition, MAC has been designated to serve as the Collaborating Centre to implement MFRD programmes in April 2019.
Research & Development
MAC carries out research & development (R&D) in tropical aquaculture through partnerships and collaboration with the industry. Key R&D focus includes:
- Selective breeding of Asian Seabass – collaboration with Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) to produce genetically superior Asian Seabass lines with fast growth rates, high disease resistance & high omega-3 content.
- Large-scale fry production technology – indoor hatchery technology development and test bedding, refining intensive larviculture protocols for different foodfish species.
MAC also welcomes research institutes and Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) to conduct collaborative R&D projects by contributing our expertise in the areas of fish husbandry such as breeding, live feed and hatchery production. MAC supports the facilitation of aquaculture R&D with:
- Shared facilities such as replicated tank systems for research and incubator spaces for test-bedding and commercialisation of R&D results.Ease of access to key biological materials such as fish eggs, larvae, rotifers and microalgae for aquaculture research.
In addition, MAC also provides technical advisory to local farms to adopt sustainable farming practices and technology, as well as hosting Learning Journeys, conducting training workshops and mentoring interns.

Location
The Senoko Fishing Port (SFP) is situated in the north of Singapore and has an area of 3.24 hectares. The port began operations in September 1997. It was constructed at a cost of about $26 million to replace the former Punggol Fishing Port.

Facilities
SFP serves as a home base for the local fishing fleet of 4 off-shore and 35 in-shore fishing vessels. The facilities available include a 180 metre-long jetty, a fish wholesale market, shops, canteen and office units for the convenience of the fishing community, as well as a computerised water-batching system for the dispensing of potable water to fishing vessels.
Supply of fish
There are 25 SFA-licensed fish merchants based at SFP, handling about 15000 tonnes of fish per annum. About half of this comprises supply landed by local fish trawlers, in-shore vessels, kelongs and fish farms, while the rest of the fish are imported.
Marketing and wholesale activities
SFP's fish wholesale market houses 36 market lots of 40 sq metres each. The business transactions take place daily from 0200 hrs to 0600 hrs, except on Monday mornings when the market is closed. Some 700 to 1000 fish retailers, fish processors and institutional buyers come daily to purchase fish.

National Centre for Food Science
The National Centre for Food Science (NCFS), located at the International Business Park, is the cornerstone of SFA’s integrated food safety programme. Our key role is to provide scientific evidence through laboratory testing, research, and risk assessment to ensure and secure a supply of safe food in Singapore.
The SFA’s NCFS is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of competent and dedicated scientists and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and facilities. NCFS provides vital support to our food safety monitoring and surveillance programmes and maintains vigilance against food safety challenges by constantly scanning the environment for new and emerging food safety threats. We keep abreast of changes and challenges by continuously updating our surveillance programmes and leveraging on new technologies to enhance our food testing capabilities.
The NCFS is designated as WOAH Collaborating Centre for Food Safety in 2014 and WHO Collaborating Centre for Food Contamination Monitoring (2020 to 2024). We are also the ASEAN Food Reference Laboratories in the following areas:
(1) Pesticide Residues (since 2004)
(2) Mycotoxins (since 2004)
(3) Environmental contaminants (since 2014)
(4) Marine Biotoxins and Scrombrotoxins (since 2019)
NCFS is also the national reference laboratory who oversees the Laboratory Recognition Programme in Singapore.
We host learning journeys for students from Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities, preferably for students studying science related topics. The details are as follows:
- Physical sessions can be arranged for up to a total of 20 pax.
- Sessions are available on every second Friday of the month, from 9.30am to 11 am at 7 International Business Park.
